Q. Does my child have to be dry before they start at Pre-school ?

A. No, children can wear nappies or pull ups if they aren’t yet dry, as each child develops at their own pace.  All staff are CRB checked and can therefore change any nappies or pull ups.

Q. What happens if my child struggles to settle during the first few weeks?

A. Staff members will work together with parents to help your child settle into Pre-school. This takes longer for some children than for others and parents should try not to worry if their child takes a while to feel comfortable.  If  your child is not settling we might suggest that the parent stays for part of the session and then reduces the time a little each session until the child feels at ease with their surroundings.

Q. Do you have a Pre-school uniform?

A. We recommend Pre-school Sweatshirts, T-shirts and Book Bags featuring the Dormansland Village Pre-school logo as they take away the worry of what to dress them in and helps each child to feel part of the group. Sweatshirts = £8:00 / T-shirts = £5:00. Also Book-bags can be purchased for £3:50. We give parents the option of  buying a ‘Starter Pack’  as their child starts, which is made up of a sweatshirt, t-shirt and book bag.

Q. What are the security arrangements for my child?

A. The main entrance door is securely  locked and a door bell has to be rung to gain entry. Once all the children have come into Pre-school the main gate stays closed at all times during Pre-school hours and is also bolted on the inside and outside for the children’s safety.  Only named persons are able to collect the children from Pre-school and if someone different to normal is picking up it has to be recorded in the ‘Parents Book’. Staff will not allow a child to leave the premises with an unauthorised person.

Q. Can my child bring a toy/comforter into the school with them?

A. Yes,when the children start they can bring in a toy/comforter from home. We also encourage the children to bring in any items of  interest which they might like  to show at Registration/Circle Time.  This helps us to follow the children’s interests and build it into activities.

Q. How will I know about my child’s progress?

A. When starting Pre-school each child has a member of staff appointed to them, known as their ‘Key Person’. The Key Person monitors and records your child’s progress in their ‘Learning Journey’ throughout their time at Pre-school. Regular consultations are held between parents and their child’s Key Person to discuss your child’s development.  If a parent would like to look at their child’s ‘Learning Journey’ at any other time they should approach their child’s Key Person who will be happy to go through it with them.

Q. When can my child start claiming the 3 & 4 year funding?

A. 3-year-olds will be able to start a funded nursery place in the September, January or April following their third birthday. Your child’s birthday must be before:

31 March will be eligible for funded nursery education from the Summer Term (April)

31 August will be eligible for funded nursery education from the Autumn Term (September)

31 December will be eligible for funded nursery education from the Spring term (January)

These are the cut off dates. If your child’s birthday is for example on the 1st or 2nd January and the term starts on the 5th January, unfortunately their funding will not start until the Summer term after Easter because they have passed the cut-off date of 31st December.

Q. How do I claim government grant money?

A. You are entitled to 5 x 3 hour sessions per week, a total of 15 hours.  Parents must sign a registration form at the start of funding and a parent declaration form at the beginning of each term.  You will also need to sign an agreement stating that you understand the consequences of taking up your free entitlement with us.  You will need to provide a photocopy of your child’s birth certificate, which will be required to support the funding application.  If you require any further information please contact Karen at Pre-school or by email (karen.preschool@yahoo.co.uk).
